Buenos Aires is known as the “Paris of South America” and is the birthplace of the Tango. Experience the best of Argentina in this lively capital city. Most residents of Buenos Aires speak Spanish, so if you also want to improve your Spanish, it's the place for you. English is not widely spoken, so as you can imagine, there's plenty of room for another qualified English teacher.

Central Buenos Aires is full of beautiful buildings designed by the same French architects that designed some of Paris’ most famous buildings. When you walk through the wide, tree-lined boulevards of Buenos Aires you could easily imagine that you have been magically transported to Paris.

Buenos Aires is an energetic and seductive port city, which stretches south-to-north along the Rio de la Plata and has been the gateway to Argentina for centuries. "Porteños", as the natives of Buenos Aires are known, possess an elaborate and rich cultural identity. They value their European heritage highly. Italian and German names outnumber Spanish names and the lifestyle and architecture are markedly more European than any other in South America. One of the world's finest opera houses, the "Teatro Colon", flourishes here on the plains alongside the river. "Porteños" are intensely involved in the life and culture of their city, and they will gladly share the secrets of Buenos Aires if you lend an ear and relate your own stories in return.

The huge metropolis of Buenos Aires is one of the most exciting, charming and fascinating of all South American capitals. It's an immensely enjoyable place just to wander about, stopping off for an espresso or an ice cream, or people-watching, or shopping, or simply soaking up the unique atmosphere. Its many barrios, or neighborhoods, are startlingly different, some decadently old-fashioned, others very modern, but all of them oozing character. Added to that, Buenos Aires is the Argentina’s gastronomic centerpiece and boasts a frenzied nightlife that makes it one of the world's great round-the-clock cities.

To complete the picture, add the Andes, Patagonia and its glacial region, the huge Igazú falls, gauchos, skiing in the southern lake district - not to mention miles of beaches to the south of Buenos Aires - and you've got a very interesting location to explore. Buenos Aires is also the business and financial centre of Argentina and so is the best place to find TEFL jobs in Argentina.

Course Description

TEFL International/Buenos Aires is a professional organization dedicated to the training of teachers. Your month long program is intensive and designed to prepare you to move into a professional role as a TEFL teacher with confidence. During the course you will be introduced to a sequence of effective teaching practices, including such topics as lesson planning, assessment of proficiency levels, classroom management. You will work with a variety of teaching materials designed for different proficiency levels and teaching environments. You will have practice in modifying and adapting these materials during your teaching practice sessions. Our course also includes segments on grammar and phonology specifically adapted to your needs as a TEFL teacher. Finally, throughout the course we will be focusing on developing the habits of self-critique and reflection that will help you to continue to grow as a teacher throughout your teaching career. Your trainers have a passion for good teaching which they are eager to share!

During the practicum portion of the course our goal is to provide you with a range of teaching opportunities, allowing you to experience personally the different contexts in which TEFL teachers work. You will both teach and observe your fellow trainees teaching during this part of the program. You will teach a minimum of six one hour classes, more where possible, and observe an equal number.

The course runs, full-time over 4 weeks. Exact times are subject to change but generally speaking the course hours are: Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with one hour for lunch. Once you get to the course, you will be given a detailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.

Trainees are expected to attend all input and other sessions included on the schedule unless they are sick and require medical treatment. This is particularly imp
ortant for Teaching Practice (TP). It is very difficult to arrange an alternate TP time and there may be an additional fee for rescheduled TP classes.

Course Dress Requirements

When you are making decisions about what clothing to bring there are a few points worth bearing in mind. TEFL/Buenos Aires classes and practice teaching sessions are conducted in a modern business and professional area of the city. People in Buenos Aires take their professional roles seriously and dress more formally than is the custom in the US. Even children going off to school are sent off by their parents neatly dressed with shoes polished and hair carefully groomed. Overly casual dress may be interpreted as a sign of indifference or lack of professionalism. In the classroom this may cost you the respect of your students. In an interview it could cost you a job. Generally speaking in Buenos Aires dress is more “smart” than “casual”. Therefore, both at the training center and absolutely during teaching practice sessions we request that you bend to these cultural differences and respect the following guidelines.

Women

Knee length or longer skirts and tailored pants (including cropped pants and capris) are appropriate. Shirts should be modest with shoulders covered. Plunging necklines, bare midriffs, see-thru fabrics, spaghetti straps and T shirts with logos are not acceptable. Sandals are acceptable but flip flops and athletic shoes are not.

Men

Long pants, with the exception of jeans, are the norm. Shirts with collars, either long or short sleeved, are acceptable. Shirts are tucked in and generally belts are worn. Sandals and sport shoes are not worn by men in the workplace. Although ties are not required you may want to bring one. Many men wear casual sport coats so if you’ve ever imagined experimenting with this style of dress this is the perfect opportunity!

For both men and women a few casual clothing items will come in handy for evenings out, lounging at home and weekend excursions. Bear in mind the weather conditions during the time you are intending to be in Buenos Aires. They vary from season to season.

Resources

Please bring a pen and a notebook for taking notes during class. All relevant instructional materials will be provided during the input sessions.

While basic supplies for the production of teaching aids for practice teaching sessions will be available at the center, trainees should expect to puchase any additional materials with their own funds and will likely need to budget for some copying as well.

Various books are provided for use by trainees. However, no books should be removed from the classroom without specific permission from the Course Academic Director. Signing in and out of all books is required.

Trainee Post-Course Evaluations

Each trainee will be asked to complete a written evaluation form at the end of the course, which will remain confidential. These evaluations are aimed to give trainees the opportunity to provide feedback regarding anything to do with the course, trainers, accommodation, etc.

In addition, we welcome your open and honest feedback at any stage during the course, so that we can continue to improve the training course and the facilities provided at the training location. Your thoughts are truly invaluable, so please share them!

Problems and Complaints

We generally feel that, as adults, the best way to resolve problems is to deal directly with those with whom you have the problem. If you do not feel that you can do this, or you have tried to resolve the problem without success, please bring the problem to the Training Coordinator.

If any trainee has a personal problem, which may interfere with course studies, please talk to one of the trainers.

If any trainee has a complaint about any aspect of the course or about any of the trainers, please see the Training Coordinator.

Transportation from Ezeiza Airport to downtown Buenos Aires

Bus

Buses are run by Manuel Tienda Léon and cost about 25 Pesos (8 USD). They leave every thirty minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 00:45 a.m. They are a quick, reliable and cheap way to get downtown. The buses drop you at the company's central office on the corner of Avda. Madero and Calle San Martín. You will then need to take a taxi from the bus terminal to your accommodation.

Taxis

Go to the official taxi stand in front of the exit in the main hall. A ride downtown will cost about 70 Pesos and you have to pay up-front. You will then be taken to your taxi by an official. DO NOT go with people who walk up to you and offer you a taxi, they are not licensed and are not insured to take passengers.

Private Transfer

TEFL International is happy to arrange a private car service to greet you at the airport and transfer you directly to your accommodation, the cost will vary slightly depending on your final destination but will cost between 55 to 70 Pesos (about 20 to 25 USD). Private transfer must be arranged at least 1 week before your scheduled arrival and you will need to inform us of all your flight details.

Accommodation

TEFL International will assist you in finding accommodation that best suits your requirements. We provide a list of options for you to choose from.

More about Buenos Aires

Internet Facilities

There are plenty of cheap internet cafes that cost between 1.5 to 2 Pesos per hour (50 to 75 US cents).

In-town Transportation

Central Buenos Aires is a great place to tour on foot, but like all capital cities it is large, so if you want to go further afield use the public transport. Public transport in Buenos Aires is generally safe and efficient, the "Subte" (Subway/Underground) is the easiest to use. It serves the city centre and northern areas.

To reach the rest of the city or go outside it's best to use the bus service known locally as the “colectivos”. There are also plenty of taxis which, surprisingly for a capital city, are not very expensive. You can easily get to our TEFL course training centre by public transport.

Shopping

Buenos Aires has probably the best shopping areas in all of Argentina. There are many areas containing malls and shopping districts full of different types of stores. Unless you are in a street market where you may be able to haggle prices, the cost of items in stores is as marked. The main shopping area in Buenos Aires is located on “Florida”

Warning 1: Shopping areas are always full of tourists and therefore pickpockets are around so watch your purse or wallet.

Warning 2: The currency symbol for the Argentinean Pesos is the same as the US Dollar sign i.e. $ If you see this on an item (e.g. $10) and the person in the shop tells you it’s 10 US Dollars, walk away. Items that are priced in US Dollars are almost always marked as $US or US$.

Beaches and Swimming

For the best and cleanest beaches in the area you’ll have to take a trip to Mar de Plata, a resort town to the south of Buenos Aires. Air-conditioned tour buses run between Buenos Aires and Mar de Plata.

Local Weather Conditions

Don't forget that Argentina is in the southern hemisphere so the seasons are reversed, December is in summer and June is in winter. Typical temperatures:

Winter (Jun, Jul, Aug) - cold (5º to 10º C);
Spring (Sep, Oct, Nov) - pleasant (10º to 20º C);
Summer (Dec, Jan, Feb) - hot and humid (20º to 34º C);
Fall/Autumn (Mar, Apr, May) - pleasant (10º to 20º C).

As this description is an average, we highly recommend that you check current weather conditions prior to departure to assist you in your travel preparations.
