Teaching English in Kolkata India

Kolkata (the former Calcutta) is famous for three things:  The Bengali people; the food; and the incredible urban sprawl.  You’ll love the people and the food, and you’ll soon think the diesel fumes and traffic jams are worth it.  Kolkata is not just a metropolis; it is an experience. Living in Kolkata, even for a matter of weeks, will mark you forever.  When you finish your course work you’ll feel like a combination of war veteran and ardent lover.  The teeming masses of people, the crumbling colonial architecture, the psychedelic blend of spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits in every meal, will leave you reeling with both confusion and pleasure.   A stroll past the Victoria Monument or on the Maiden will remind you of when the British lion’s roar was heard in every corner of the world.

The city was founded on the banks of the river Hooghly in 1702 by the East India Company.  Fortunes from its trade in jute and opium soon gave it the name, City of Palaces.  Rapid industrial growth in the 1850’s insured its stellar position among the cosmopolitan wonders of the world.  Kolkata was the capital of the British Raj until 1911.  Indians consider it the cradle of liberty, since it was here that Indian Independence first became more than just a catch phrase.

Bengali street vendors will make with the jokes, often in English, as if they were Borscht Belt comedians.  They’ll serve you up a bowl of fragrant hilsa jhaal – fish curry – that would make Mother Theresa turn cartwheels.  There are museums and religious processions around every corner.  If you’re not careful you’ll come down with cultural overload.

There’s only one cure for that; drink a cup of cool whipped yogurt with cucumbers and tamarind paste, and then spend a few more weeks in marvelous, manic, Kolkata.
