Tokyo Directors/Trainers

David Martin, one of the co-trainers for TEFL International Tokyo, arrived in Japan immediately after graduating from a university in his native California in 1981.  While at the university, Dave had taken courses in ESL methodology and phonology, along with courses in the Japanese language, in preparation for launching his English teaching career in Japan.  Before his own TESOL certification, Dave had been keeping abreast of the changing trends in ESL education through publications and English-teacher organizations. Dave was a founding member of the Chiba chapter of the Japan Association of Language Teachers (JALT). Along with his TEFL International trainer duties Dave is currently teaching English at university in Tokyo twice weekly. Dave and his Japanese wife, Mayumi, have two grown children.

He graduated from Western Washington University with a BA in American Cultural Studies, Master Degree in Education (TESOL) from Temple University and a Professional Education Certificate (Social Studies grades 4-12) from the Woodring College of Education. After marrying his Japanese wife Yuko, Larry traveled to Mallorca, Spain where he did his teaching internship at The American International School. Tokyo Japan View

TEFL International now offers its world renowned TESOL Certification Course in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo is the world's most populous metropolitan area and is the center of Japanese culture, finance, and government. Describing Tokyo to someone who has never been there is a formidable task. A bustling cosmopolitan city, Tokyo is a major transportation hub and a world economic and industrial center. The city boasts a large number of world-class institutions of higher education, the highest concentration of universities in Japan. Tokyo was known as Edo until 1868, when the Japanese imperial family was moved there from Kyoto. Metropolitan Tokyo is generally defined as the four prefectures of Tokyo, Saitaima, Kanagawa, and Chiba. Tokyo definitely has the power to make you go ‘Wow!’ The sense that nothing here is permanent has produced a city that renews itself at an unimaginable speed. In some parts of the city, the streets are as crowded at 3 a.m. as they are at 3 p.m. With its high-energy, visual overload, Tokyo makes even New York seem like a sleepy, laid-back town. Tokyo remains one of the safest cities in the world, with remarkably little crime or violence. No matter how lost you may become, you would still know that people would go out of their way to help you. Hardworking, honest, and helpful to strangers, the Japanese are their country's greatest asset.

TEFL International Tokyo is located in “Shitamachi” (old downtown Tokyo) home to the famous movie character “Tora-san” and the cartoon character “Ryo-san”.  People living in this suburban area are friendly and have a strong sense of community. They love Matsuri (festivals) and helping each other. Things are less hectic here and less expensive than central Tokyo. You can even get fresh locally grown vegetables at local markets and stands. Our offices and housing are less than 5 minutes walk from Tokyo’s finest park Mizumoto Koen. (see link below)  The exciting attractions of central Tokyo are close at hand. Asakusa (20min) Ueno (20 min.), Akihabara (25 min.), Shinjuku (40 min.), Omotesando (40 min.) and Narita Airport is about one hour away from Kanamachi Station. . Katsushika-ku is a great place to live and learn.
