This unit taught the importance of reading and listening skills and how to teach them to a class. Important things to note were as follows: use varying interesting topics over a period of time to best cater to everyone's interests, pre-teach complex vocabulary or structures that will be needed to understand the material, and use a mix of authentic and non-authentic texts that are fit for the students' abilities. The most important thing I learned was to not over do the pre-teaching, as that would take away the students' opportunity to deduce meaning from context clues. For example, if a text was about birds and the verb "to fly" had not been taught yet, the students would likely be able to deduce the meaning of the verb fly from the context of the text. This can be checked with a worksheet about the text in the study phase.
